A recent study of high school students reveals that addictive use of short-form video apps predicts a decline in a student’s ability to handle everyday academic stress. The research, published in Computers in Human Behavior, indicates that compulsive viewing is linked to a shortened focus on the future, which is associated with a harder time bouncing back from routine school difficulties. Over time, this reduced academic coping capacity can lead to even more frequent video consumption as a form of escape.
Apps like TikTok and Instagram Reels dominate the digital lives of young people by delivering rapid bursts of sensory stimulation and immediate gratification. When teenagers struggle to control their use of these platforms, they can develop what psychologists call short-form video addiction. This behavior is characterized by a loss of control over viewing habits and a strong reliance on videos for emotional regulation.
Researchers wanted to understand exactly how this digital habit interferes with a student’s day-to-day school life. Past studies have linked video addiction to anxiety, sleep problems, and poor grades. However, those broad outcomes usually represent the final stages of a long struggle. The researchers were interested in the daily psychological processes that occur long before a student entirely disengages from school.
To capture this daily reality, they focused on a psychological concept known as academic buoyancy. Unlike academic resilience, which describes how students recover from major traumas or severe adversities, academic buoyancy measures how well students navigate ordinary pressures. It reflects the ability to bounce back from a bad test score, a confusing lesson, or a stressful homework assignment.
A team led by Guanxing Xiong at South China Normal University designed a study to track the relationship between video addiction and academic buoyancy. They based their work on a framework called Temporal Self-Regulation Theory. This theory suggests that human behavior is driven by an ongoing tension between immediate impulses and the effort required to achieve long-term goals.
In an educational setting, studying requires delaying gratification, while watching a short video offers an instant psychological reward. The researchers suspected that the endless stream of instant rewards from algorithms might alter how teenagers view time itself. Specifically, they looked at future time perspective, which is a person’s ability to visualize the future and connect their present actions to long-term outcomes.
The team hypothesized that addictive video habits might shrink this future-oriented mindset. A weakened connection to the future could then make the immediate discomfort of studying feel unbearable, eroding a student’s academic buoyancy.
To test these ideas, Xiong and colleagues conducted a one-year study involving 1,567 first-year high school students in Eastern China. The researchers surveyed the participants three times, with six months between each session. At each stage, the students answered questionnaires designed to measure their levels of short-form video addiction, future time perspective, and academic buoyancy.
For example, students rated their agreement with statements regarding how well they deal with schoolwork pressure to assess their buoyancy. To measure their future time perspective, they responded to prompts about how often they think about the long-term consequences of their actions. The longitudinal design allowed the researchers to observe how changes in one behavior predicted changes in another months later.
The results revealed a cyclical relationship between video habits and school coping skills. Students who reported higher levels of video addiction at the beginning of the study experienced a drop in academic buoyancy six months and one year later. Their ability to handle routine school stress deteriorated as their video consumption habits took hold.
At the same time, the reverse was also true. Students who started out with high academic buoyancy were less likely to report video addiction six months later. This suggests that the capacity to manage daily school pressures offers some protection against the pull of endless video scrolling.
The researchers also discovered how this process unfolds psychologically. High levels of video addiction in the first survey predicted a shortened future time perspective in the second survey. In turn, that narrowed view of the future predicted lower academic buoyancy in the final survey.
Essentially, compulsive engagement with rapid-fire, instantly rewarding videos seems to anchor a student’s attention firmly in the present moment. This makes the distant rewards of studying feel less appealing. As a result, students struggle more to push through daily academic frustrations because the ultimate payoff seems too far away.
When students lose their academic buoyancy, they often experience negative emotions like anxiety and helplessness. To cope with these unpleasant feelings, they might turn back to short-form videos for quick relief. The researchers noted that this creates a negative feedback loop where addictive video use and poor academic coping continually reinforce one another.
On a positive note, the study found a mutually beneficial relationship between future time perspective and academic buoyancy. Students who maintained a strong focus on their future goals showed better academic buoyancy later on. Conversely, students who successfully managed their daily school stress gradually developed a stronger, more long-term view of their futures.
The findings rely on self-reported surveys, which means the students’ actual behaviors might differ from how they perceive and report them. The study tracked relationships over time, but this type of data cannot prove direct causation. Unmeasured variables in a student’s life could still influence both their media habits and their school performance.
The research was conducted exclusively with high school students in China, a country known for its highly competitive educational environment. The intense academic pressure might shape how these teenagers respond to stress and digital distractions. Exploring these patterns in different cultural and educational settings could help clarify how universal these psychological mechanisms are.
Future research might also look into whether specific interventions can break this cycle. The researchers suggest that schools and parents could help by training students to visualize their future goals more vividly. Enhancing a teenager’s connection to their future self might offer a psychological buffer against the immediate temptations of digital media.
