People who possess unconscious antagonistic traits may struggle to forgive others on a deeply automatic level, avoiding reconciliation rather than actively seeking revenge. Researchers evaluating women in psychiatric care found that hidden narcissistic tendencies are linked to reduced forgiveness, even when these traits are not apparent on traditional self-report surveys. The study was published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry.
Forgiveness plays a vital role in repairing relationships and improving mental health. The act of forgiving can be a situational response to a specific offense, or it can be a broader personality trait. People who generally find it easier to forgive often experience lower levels of anxiety and depression.
Narcissism often works against the capacity to let go of a grudge. Psychologists view narcissism not as a single trait but as a spectrum of characteristics. Some facets are relatively harmless, such as a desire for admiration or a need to be seen as a leader.
Other aspects of narcissism are highly defensive and hostile. This hostile side is known as antagonistic narcissism. People with pronounced antagonistic traits tend to react to perceived insults with anger, entitlement, and exploitation.
In therapy, these tendencies can make it difficult for patients to resolve interpersonal conflicts or manage long-held resentment. Previous investigations into narcissism and forgiveness have heavily relied on self-report surveys. These direct measures ask participants to rate their own personality traits and typical behaviors.
Surveys have a major limitation when evaluating socially undesirable traits like hostility or socially desirable behaviors like forgiveness. People may alter their answers to appear more favorable, or they might simply lack the self-awareness to accurately report their own flaws. To account for this bias, psychologists use dual-process models of the human mind.
These models suggest that human behavior is driven by two distinct systems of information processing. One system involves conscious, deliberate reflection. The other is impulsive, operating automatically based on deeply ingrained mental associations.
When people face stress or experience mental health struggles, their impulsive system can override their conscious intentions. Philipp Wülfing, a researcher at the University Medical Center Rostock, and Ramzi Fatfouta, an independent researcher in Berlin, wanted to understand how these dual systems influence forgiveness. They designed a study to evaluate both conscious and automatic levels of antagonistic narcissism in a clinical setting.
The researchers analyzed data from 102 women receiving treatment at a psychosomatic clinic. The patients had various clinical diagnoses, with major depression and anxiety disorders being the most common. To measure explicit traits, the participants completed several standardized questionnaires.
These surveys assessed their conscious feelings of entitlement, rivalry, and their general tendency to forgive others. They also answered questions about how they handle specific interpersonal offenses. These situational questions measured the participants’ motivation to seek revenge, avoid the offender, or act with benevolence.
A revenge motivation might involve a desire to make the offender pay, while avoidance involves physically or emotionally distancing oneself from the person. Benevolence reflects a lingering sense of goodwill despite the harm caused. Next, the researchers evaluated the patients using the Implicit Association Test.
This computer-based assessment measures automatic cognitive associations by analyzing how quickly a person sorts words on a screen. In one test, participants rapidly categorized words related to themselves and words related to narcissism. A faster reaction time when pairing “me” with narcissistic terms indicates a stronger unconscious, or implicit, antagonistic tendency.
A second computer test measured implicit forgiveness by analyzing the sorting speed of words related to the self alongside words associated with being forgiving or vengeful. By combining these tools, the researchers could compare the patients’ conscious beliefs with their automatic psychological responses.
After collecting the data, the research team analyzed the statistical relationship between the different tests. They found that implicit antagonistic narcissism was strongly linked to an overall lack of forgiveness. Participants who scored higher on the implicit narcissism test demonstrated lower automatic forgiveness on the computer task.
These individuals also reported lower general forgiveness on the traditional surveys. When reacting to specific offenses, these participants expressed a stronger desire to avoid the person who wronged them. They also reported lower levels of goodwill or benevolence toward the offender.
The implicit computer test accounted for differences in forgiveness above and beyond what the traditional surveys could measure. The explicit self-reports of narcissism had very few links to the forgiveness measures. The researchers only observed a connection between conscious rivalry and the motivation for revenge.
The implicit narcissism test did not predict a desire for revenge. The authors suggest that implicit antagonism reflects an automatic emotional response, such as social withdrawal and a lack of warmth. Revenge, by contrast, may require conscious planning, strategic thinking, and a more deliberate cognitive process.
The automatic associations measured by the computer test align more with immediate, emotional reactions rather than calculated retaliation. The current findings are based on a sample of 102 female patients, meaning the results may not universally apply to men or to non-clinical populations. Antagonistic traits can present differently across genders and in the general public.
Expanding the participant pool in future studies could help verify these patterns across different demographics. Because the study assessed participants at a single point in time, the results cannot establish the order in which these traits develop. The data shows an association between unconscious narcissism and lower forgiveness, but it does not prove that one directly causes the other.
The research also relied on computer tasks and surveys rather than observing real-world interactions. Tracking how people actually behave when resolving conflicts with friends or family members could provide a more complete picture of the forgiveness process. Despite these limitations, the findings highlight the need to assess hidden personality traits in psychiatric care.
Therapists treating patients with antagonistic traits may need to look beyond a patient’s conscious self-image. Interventions that target automatic emotional responses and deeply held relationship patterns might help individuals overcome their internal barriers to forgiveness.
