101 fun facts about the mind and brain, according to science

You are sniffing right now. On top of each ordinary breath, you take roughly 240 extra small inhalations an hour, sampling the air without any idea you’re doing it. We know because people born without a sense of smell don’t โ€” and put a normal smeller in an odourless room, and the habit fades within the hour.

That’s one of 101 findings below, all from peer-reviewed research. And it is not even the strangest one.


The brain is a stranger organ than you think

1. Your brain glows, and some of that light escapes through your skull. All living tissue gives off ultraweak photon emissions as a byproduct of metabolism โ€” light roughly a million times too faint to see. Because the brain burns so much energy, it glows brighter than most organs, and researchers recording volunteers in total darkness found the signal shifts depending on whether the eyes are open or a sound is playing. They’ve proposed a name for reading it: photoencephalography. Read more

2. You have a third eye. It’s buried in the middle of your brain. The tuatara, a lizard-like reptile in New Zealand, has a working third eye on top of its head โ€” lens, retina, nerve connections, the lot. A new hypothesis argues our own pineal gland is the descendant of that structure: a single median eye on an ancestor 600 million years back, now sunk deep inside the skull and lightless, yet still running your sleep cycle in response to light. In fish, it can still detect light straight through the skull. Read more

3. Some brains come out blue at autopsy. Forensic pathologists in Frankfurt opened the skull of a 72-year-old man and found his brain turning vivid turquoise as it met the air. Reviewing decades of autopsy records turned up eleven similar cases, all traced to methylene blue or toluidine blue administered before death. As little as 25 milligrams was enough to stain the organ. Read more

4. Death isn’t a switch. There’s a wave, and it can sometimes be reversed. When oxygen stops, the brain burns through its ATP, dumps glutamate, and falls to a flat EEG. But the flat line isn’t the end โ€” researchers tracked a terminal wave of neuronal depolarisation originating in layer 5 of the neocortex in rats, and found that with successful reoxygenation it can be followed by what they call a wave of resuscitation. Just before it, there’s a surge of gamma and beta activity โ€” the frequencies associated with conscious experience. Read more

5. Cut the cable between the brain’s hemispheres and a few surviving threads carry the whole conversation. The corpus callosum bundles some 200 million nerve fibres, and the assumption was that it’s mapped โ€” specific fibres for specific jobs, so cutting part of it should break specific functions. Studying six adults who had the structure surgically severed to treat epilepsy, researchers found that a tiny fraction of remaining fibres sustained near-normal integrated brain function. Read more

6. The little wrinkles on your brain aren’t just packing material. Cortical folds were long dismissed as the inevitable result of cramming a big brain into a small skull. But the shallowest, last-forming ones โ€” tertiary sulci, many of them uniquely human โ€” turn out to matter. In 43 children and adolescents, deeper tertiary sulci went with stronger connectivity between the prefrontal and parietal regions that handle reasoning. Read more

7. Consciousness may be gated by a structure the size of an egg, deep in your brain. Five patients with electrodes already implanted for drug-resistant headaches let researchers record directly from the thalamus during a visual awareness task. Its intralaminar and medial nuclei lit up earlier and more strongly than the prefrontal cortex โ€” reversing the long-held assumption that the thalamus is a passive relay station and the cortex is where awareness happens. 8. Memories are held together by molecular glue. The proteins in your brain turn over constantly, which raises an obvious problem: how does anything last for decades? The answer appears to be KIBRA, a molecule that binds to the enzyme PKMฮถ, anchoring strengthened connections in place even as their components are replaced. Read more

9. Your brain builds memories out of the same stuff that wrecks it in Alzheimer’s. Amyloids are the villains of neurodegeneration โ€” stable protein fibres that destroy cells. But researchers working with fruit flies showed the nervous system deliberately forms amyloids to store memories, and identified the chaperone protein that controls when it happens, so that it only occurs when an experience is worth keeping. Same mechanism, opposite purpose, carefully regulated. Read more


Your senses are lying to you, constantly

10. Five people have now seen a colour that doesn’t exist in nature. Every colour you’ve ever seen stimulates more than one type of cone cell, because their sensitivities overlap. Berkeley researchers built a system called Oz that maps a person’s individual cones, tracks their eye movements, and fires laser pulses at up to 1,000 M cones and nothing else. The result is a blue-green they named “olo,” so saturated that participants had to add heaps of white light before they could match it on a normal display. One described the most vivid natural colour as looking pale by comparison. Read more

11. Nobody is sure how you tell red from yellow, and the missing piece may have just turned up. Three cone types feed into retinal ganglion cells along three known “cardinal” pathways โ€” which don’t remotely account for the range of colour humans actually experience. Using adaptive optics borrowed from astronomy, Rochester researchers found rare non-cardinal cells in the fovea that don’t fit the standard scheme. As the lead researcher put it, nothing is certain about these cells yet except that they exist. Read more

12. Blinking doesn’t just wet your eyes โ€” it reformats what you see. We spend 3 to 8 percent of our waking hours with our eyes shut, far more than lubrication requires. University of Rochester researchers found that the abrupt luminance change each blink produces actually helps the visual system process information, improving acuity rather than interrupting it. 13. A real word sounds louder than a nonsense word played at the same volume. Researchers played people pairs of real words and pronounceable nonsense words at identical levels. Listeners judged the real words to be louder โ€” in their native language and, somewhat less strongly, in their second. It’s the auditory cousin of a known visual illusion where familiar words look physically bigger. It may also explain why films in a foreign language make everyone reach for the volume. Read more

14. You can feel a touch that isn’t happening, if you’re wearing a VR headset. Asked to touch their own virtual body with a virtual stick, 36 participants reported a tingling or prickling sensation at the point of contact โ€” with nothing touching them. Stranger still, it worked when they touched parts of their arm that weren’t rendered at all. The likely explanation: your brain normally dampens the sensation of self-touch in advance, and here the dampening signal fires with nothing to dampen. Read more

15. To judge how big a woman’s body is, your visual system looks at her legs. Shown only the bottom half of a body, people estimated size just as accurately as when shown the whole thing โ€” the torso, arms and shoulders added essentially nothing. The lower body carries the information, with thigh and hip features doing most of the work. Read more

16. Reading a long number is far more work than reading a long word. Eye-tracking found adults make up to seven times more fixations reading long numerals than long words, and up to nine times more saccades. Each fixation also lasts longer โ€” around 300 milliseconds versus 250. Your eyes crawl across a phone number in a way they never do across a sentence. Read more

17. People born without a sense of smell breathe differently โ€” even asleep. Comparing 21 people with congenital anosmia against 31 normal smellers, researchers found that smellers took about 240 more small inhalation peaks per hour while awake โ€” tiny sniffs riding on top of each breath. Put a normal smeller in an odourless room and their breathing starts to look like an anosmic’s. You are sampling the air constantly without noticing. Read more


Life inside your own head

18. Not everyone has an inner voice โ€” and it shows up on tests. Researchers coined the term anendophasia for its absence. People without inner speech struggled more with verbal memory and rhyme recognition, but performed no differently on task-switching or visual discrimination โ€” the deficit is specific, not general. 19. Some people have no mind’s eye, no inner voice, and no dreams they can see or hear. Researchers coined the term “deep aphantasia” for one of the paper’s own co-authors, who cannot conjure images or sounds, has no inner monologue when she reads, and experiences neither audio nor visual content while dreaming. She can, however, imagine tastes and textures. Her co-author, also aphantasic, can hear entire symphonies in his head at will. Read more

20. One man sees his orgasms in colour. Psychiatrists in Mashhad, Iran documented a 31-year-old โ€” “Mr. R” โ€” whose vision goes sharper, brighter and unmistakably pink just after he climaxes. As a teenager, chest pain from a heart condition registered not as pain but as a sensation of whiteness. His colour vision and neurology tested completely normal. Around 4% of people have some synesthesia; orgasm-in-colour is among the rarest forms known. Read more

21. Synesthetes dream about different things than everyone else. Analyzing 2,337 dream reports scraped from Reddit โ€” 1,169 from self-identified synesthetes against matched controls โ€” researchers found four themes that showed up disproportionately in synesthete dreams: digital life, interpersonal regret, unfamiliar or dystopian worlds, and violent conflict. A trait defined by waking perception apparently follows you into sleep. Read more

22. LSD gave a man blind from birth vivid experiences โ€” none of them visual. A congenitally blind musician, known in the case report by the name of his preferred LSD, described psychedelics as amplifying sound, touch and smell rather than producing sight. What did change was his dreaming: on LSD he sometimes dreamt in prose, elaborately worded, occasionally Shakespearean, and lasting longer than usual. It’s the first published qualitative account of psychedelics in someone blind from birth. Read more

23. Creative people’s brains barely flinch at the bizarre. Shown “oddball” stimuli โ€” the surprising item in an otherwise predictable sequence โ€” creative individuals produced a markedly reduced brain response. They aren’t filtering weirdness out as noise; they process the odd thing much as they’d process anything else. That may be why creative people notice details the rest of us discard. Read more

24. Trypophobia is real, and about a tenth of people have it. The aversion to clusters of small holes is often dismissed as an internet meme. But when researchers surveyed 2,558 people, they found 24% of trypophobic individuals had never heard of the condition โ€” meaning they couldn’t have caught it socially. Prevalence came out around 10%. Read more

25. There is a specific spot in the genome associated with rage at the sound of chewing. A genetic analysis of misophonia pinpointed a locus called rs2937573, sitting near the TENM2 gene involved in brain development, strongly associated with intense fury triggered by chewing sounds. The condition also showed genetic overlap with anxiety and PTSD. Read more


Memory is not a recording

26. The Mandela Effect is a real, measurable memory error โ€” not just an internet meme. Shown one correct version of a famous icon and two doctored ones, people reliably picked the same wrong answer. C-3PO has one silver leg, though almost nobody remembers it that way โ€” possibly because media mostly shows his upper body, so the brain fills the gap with the reasonable assumption that a body is one colour. We forget the same things as each other. Read more

27. When a song is stuck in your head, you’re probably hearing it in the correct key. Researchers texted 30 non-musicians six times a day for a week, asking them to hum whatever was looping in their head. Comparing the recordings to the originals, 44.7% were in the exact same key and 68.9% were within a semitone. Perfect pitch is supposed to be roughly a one-in-ten-thousand trait. Your brain apparently keeps absolute pitch on file without telling you. Read more

28. Causation tells you the time, not the other way round. Shown three squares in a domino collision, participants watched A hit B โ€” but C actually started moving before B did. Across three experiments with 607 people, viewers insisted they’d seen B move first, reordering reality to fit the causal story. As the lead researcher put it: if you believe the impact is what breaks the glass, you perceive the shattering after the impact, even when the events genuinely ran the other way. Read more

29. Anything you’ve seen repeatedly feels like it happened longer ago. Across six experiments, images shown multiple times were remembered as having first appeared up to 25% further back in time than images shown once โ€” and the more repetitions, the bigger the distortion. This inverts the standard assumption that faint memories feel old and vivid ones feel recent. The researchers note one consequence: it may be why the pandemic lockdowns feel like ancient history. 30. An “aha” moment roughly doubles how well you remember something. Scanning people as they solved visual puzzles, researchers found that solutions arriving as a sudden flash were remembered about twice as well as ones worked out gradually. In the instant of insight, visual cortex, amygdala and hippocampus lock into a tightly integrated “solution network” โ€” and how well those regions talked to each other predicted whether people still had the answer five days later. 31. Taking up Spanish really does corrode your French. Multilinguals have long claimed that a new language pushes out the old ones, and it turns out they’re right. When participants learned Spanish words for concepts they already knew in English, the English versions became harder to retrieve โ€” immediately, without needing time to consolidate, and even for languages learned long ago to high proficiency. Sleep and dreams

32. Negative memories can be defused while you sleep. Using targeted memory reactivation โ€” audio cues that reactivate positive associations during sleep โ€” researchers interfered with the consolidation of unpleasant memories formed earlier that day. Recall of the bad memories weakened, and positive ones surfaced involuntarily more often. Read more

33. A ยฃ5 eye mask measurably improves your memory the next day. Ninety-four people wore one nightly for a week, and came out with better episodic encoding and faster reaction times on a word-pair task. A second experiment used a control mask with the eye region cut out, ruling out the sensation of wearing something โ€” and traced the benefit to time spent in slow-wave sleep. Read more

34. Your hippocampus goes briefly, deliberately silent each night to make room. If the same neurons keep storing new memories, why don’t they fill up? Recording from sleeping mice, researchers found bursts they named BARR events, in which highly active hippocampal regions abruptly fall quiet โ€” resetting those neurons for reuse the next day. Block the events with optogenetics and the mice forget what they learned. Read more

35. Your daydreams are as bizarre as your dreams โ€” they’re just weird differently. Comparing waking mind-wandering against nighttime dreaming, researchers found the two are about equally dense in bizarre content. The difference is in the shape of the strangeness: dreams feature impossibilities that morph slowly, while daydreams make abrupt jumps in logic. The old assumption that sleep holds a monopoly on the surreal doesn’t survive the comparison. Read more

36. Night owls may be procrastinating because they can’t picture their future self. Among Chinese students, those with a weaker “future time perspective” โ€” less belief that today’s choices will benefit tomorrow’s self โ€” showed more impulsivity, more problematic smartphone use, and more bedtime procrastination. Staying up scrolling isn’t only a discipline problem; it’s a failure to feel connected to the person who has to get up. Read more

37. Music before bed can sabotage your sleep by seeding earworms. Listening to music close to bedtime was linked to worse sleep via long-lasting earworms โ€” tunes that keep replaying after the music stops. The researchers found the relationship ran the wrong way from intuition: the more music people listened to, the more likely they were to get stuck with one overnight. Read more


What you eat and drink is messing with you

38. Fish oil reduces aggression by as much as 28%. A meta-analysis of intervention studies found omega-3 supplementation cut aggressive behavior across a striking range of populations and settings โ€” children and adults, clinical and non-clinical, in the lab and in the real world. Read more

39. Whether coffee helps your brain depends on your genes. People who metabolize caffeine quickly did worse at emotion recognition when they drank a lot of it โ€” but showed better executive function at moderate doses. The same cup does different things to different nervous systems. Read more

40. Morning coffee is linked to living longer; afternoon coffee isn’t. People who confined their coffee to the morning had lower mortality, particularly from heart disease, than both non-drinkers and all-day drinkers. One likely explanation is that late caffeine disrupts circadian rhythms and sleep. Read more

41. Coffee does something to your brain that caffeine alone doesn’t. Portuguese researchers scanned people after coffee and after plain caffeine. Both made the brain more ready to shift from rest into work, but only actual coffee activated regions tied to working memory and goal-directed behavior. Whether that’s the smell, the taste or the ritual, the study couldn’t say. Read more

42. Caffeine blunts alcohol’s effect on the brain’s reward system. Researchers found caffeine blocks alcohol’s ability to raise dopamine in the mesolimbic pathway โ€” meaning it may dampen precisely the mechanism that makes drinking addictive. Read more

43. A calorie-free sweetener can leave your brain hungrier than sugar does. Brain imaging showed that sucralose raised activity in the hypothalamus, the appetite-regulating region, more than either sugar or water. Sweetness without the expected calories appears to disrupt satiety signalling โ€” most strongly in women and people with obesity. Read more

44. Creatine โ€” the gym supplement โ€” improves memory, especially in the old. A meta-analysis of randomized trials found creatine monohydrate enhanced memory performance in healthy people, with the strongest effects in adults aged 66 to 76. The brain is metabolically expensive, and creatine is fundamentally an energy-buffering molecule. Read more

45. A compound in lion’s mane mushroom makes neurons grow enormous grasping structures. Researchers isolated hericene A and found it drove hippocampal neurons to sprout long branches even without the growth factors they normally require to survive. It also hugely enlarged growth cones โ€” the structures at branch tips that feel out the environment โ€” some ending up bigger than the neuron’s own cell body. Mice fed the extract showed improved memory. Read more

46. A junk-food adolescence can dent memory permanently โ€” but scientists found the off switch. Rats fed a cafeteria-style diet of high-fat, high-sugar food as juveniles had lasting hippocampal memory problems that survived a switch back to healthy eating. The gut microbiome recovered; the memory didn’t. The culprit turned out to be disrupted acetylcholine signaling โ€” and dosing the animals with drugs that mimic acetylcholine reversed the deficits. 47. Cannabis users reported less subjective cognitive decline. Among U.S. adults aged 45 and over, non-medical cannabis use was associated with reduced odds of self-reported worsening memory and confusion โ€” not the direction most people would predict. Read more


The gut, the mouth, and other places you wouldn’t look

48. Social anxiety may be partly transmissible through gut bacteria. When researchers transplanted gut microbes from socially anxious adolescents into newborn rats, the animals grew up more sensitive to social fear, with altered brain chemistry to match. Elevated Prevotella was among the bacterial imbalances involved. Read more

49. What happens in your mouth doesn’t stay in your mouth. Comparing the saliva of people with mental health symptoms against healthy controls, researchers found distinct bacterial signatures: PTSD and depression symptoms came with more Prevotella histicola, a bug tied to gum inflammation, while people with anxiety disorders had less Neisseria elongata. Everyone’s heard of the gut-brain axis. This one is the oral-brain axis. Read more

50. A bowel movement measurably speeds up your thinking. This started with an oddity in a PET scan: the region below the navel takes up glucose at rates rivalling the brain itself. So researchers had 13 elite triathletes run Stroop tests before and after defecating. Average completion time fell from 27.1 seconds to 24.4, and to 23.4 after magnesium. Oxygen consumption below the navel rose during the task. Gut feelings, possibly literally. Read more

51. There is a real condition where orgasm is followed by days of flu. Post-orgasmic illness syndrome brings exhaustion, feverishness, muscle weakness and trouble concentrating, starting within minutes to hours of ejaculation and lasting several days. It appears in neither the ICD nor the DSM, has no agreed diagnostic criteria, and no treatment works reliably. Mostly documented in men, with limited evidence it occurs in women too. Read more


People are strange

52. Your face may slowly grow into your name. Adults’ faces can be matched to their names at better-than-chance rates โ€” but children’s faces can’t, and neither can digitally aged versions of children’s faces. That gap suggests the resemblance isn’t innate; it accumulates through a lifetime of living up to a name, via hairstyle and expression and the wrinkles left by habitual smiling. Read more

53. Colourblind men are less fussy eaters. Food neophobia โ€” resistance to unfamiliar food โ€” turned out to be lower in 103 colourblind men than in 273 men with normal colour vision, and they reported less food disgust too. Participants had no idea colour vision was what the study was about. Seeing a narrower palette seems to soften the emotional recoil from an unfamiliar plate. Read more

54. Asking a child for help makes them enjoy helping less. Across 686 children aged 6 to 11 in Germany, Ecuador, Japan, India and the United States, spontaneous helping felt better than requested helping. The researchers expected the effect to be strongest in individualistic cultures โ€” the pattern showed up more broadly than that. Read more

55. Becoming a celibate monk can be good for your genes. In Tibetan villages where up to one in seven boys entered a monastery, researchers reconstructed the genealogies of 530 households and found that men with a monk brother were wealthier, owned more yaks, and had more children than men whose brothers stayed home. Removing a rival heir from the competition propagated the family line more effectively than another son would have. Read more

56. Tears are a weapon that wounds both parties. In conflict, crying damaged the opponent’s reputation โ€” but also the crier’s. Staying stoic protected your own standing while doing little to the other person’s. Yelling was the worst of both: costly to the yeller, and it didn’t dent the opponent at all. Read more

57. Shredding on a metal guitar is aimed at other men. Surveying 44 heterosexual male metal guitarists, researchers found that perceived playing speed predicted intrasexual competitiveness โ€” the pleasure of feeling superior to other male guitarists โ€” while time spent on chords predicted desire for casual sex. Neither predicted actual number of partners. The virtuosity is a display for rivals, not for mates. Read more

58. The two kinds of narcissist want completely different jobs. Among 716 students, grandiose narcissism tracked with interest in science and business, while vulnerable narcissism tracked with artistic, social and applied fields. Grandiose scores also correlated negatively with workstyle measures like accountability. Read more

59. Cats have attachment styles, and their hormones follow suit. Cats sort into secure, anxious and avoidant attachment much as human infants do, and the category predicts both behavior problems and oxytocin response during interaction with their owner. Securely attached cats showed a bigger oxytocin rise when their owner appeared โ€” likely because their baseline sat lower. Read more

60. Being polite makes you talk more slowly, without your realizing it. Asked to read an identical script either politely or casually, participants took an average of 29.66 seconds in the polite condition and 27.94 in the casual one. The instructions never mentioned speed โ€” the slowdown was spontaneous. Listeners even read slowness as politeness in a language they didn’t speak. Read more

61. One joke on your rรฉsumรฉ measurably improves your odds. Researchers sent two identical fictional rรฉsumรฉs to 345 companies, differing only in one line. The version claiming a proven track record of turning caffeine input into productivity output drew roughly three times the response rate. They call it “humorbragging,” and it also predicted investment offers across 154 Shark Tank pitches. Critically, it only works when the humour is self-enhancing โ€” self-deprecation buys warmth at the cost of looking competent. Read more

62. Getting off a train, you will follow the stranger in front of you. Tracking roughly 100,000 passengers stepping onto a platform and choosing between a direct route to the exit and a slightly longer one around a kiosk, researchers found people strongly tended to take whichever path the person immediately ahead had taken โ€” with travelling companions algorithmically filtered out, so these were genuine strangers. No crowd model reproduced the real patterns until this “stranger-following effect” was added. Read more

63. A neural network can guess your family income from your body shape. Researchers fed body scans to a deep learning model and found a measurable association between body shape and income โ€” one of those findings that says more about the social world than about bodies. Read more


Reading other people

64. Manipulative men can spot other manipulative men. Women score worse the more manipulative they are. Researchers built composite faces by blending the five highest and five lowest scorers on each dark triad trait. Everyone could read Machiavellianism, psychopathy and narcissism off female faces at above-chance rates. Male faces were far harder โ€” but men who scored high on dark traits themselves were better at reading them in other men. Among women, the correlation ran the opposite way. Read more

65. Couples’ brains fall into sync in a way friends’ brains don’t. Watching emotional videos together, romantic partners showed greater synchronization in prefrontal activity than close friends did. A machine learning model could use that neural signature to tell couples from friends. The lead researcher traced his interest to a line of ninth-century Chinese poetry about lovers whose hearts beat as one. Read more

66. Sisters’ brains process a film more alike than friends’ brains do. Thirty women were arranged into ten trios โ€” two sisters plus a friend of one of them โ€” and scanned while watching the same movie. Sisters’ brain activity was more similar, particularly in the default-mode network, and the effect wasn’t explained by anatomy, eye movements, heart rate or breathing. They weren’t just seeing the same thing; they were evaluating it the same way. Read more

67. Lonely people trust more, while expecting less. Across three studies, lonely individuals handed over more in economic trust games โ€” but predicted their partners would be less trustworthy. Extraverts, who were less lonely overall, showed the exact reverse. Loneliness appears to push people toward connection and toward pessimism about it simultaneously. Read more

68. A week-long scavenger hunt cured people of fearing strangers. 286 participants used an app with 29 tasks sending them to find and talk to a stranger matching some description โ€” someone drinking coffee, someone in interesting shoes. By day five they felt less awkward, more confident and anticipated less rejection, and the effect held for at least a week afterward. Expectations improved day by day, which suggests repetition was the active ingredient. Read more

69. People with dark personality traits are happiest with partners just like them. Individuals high in psychopathy, Machiavellianism and narcissism reported more satisfying relationships when their partner scored high too โ€” mutual recognition apparently beating mutual decency. Read more

70. There is a research field called “malevolent creativity,” and a rough childhood predicts it. It’s the study of ingenuity aimed at harming people โ€” inventive revenge, elaborate lies, well-engineered pranks. Young adults reporting four or more adverse childhood experiences scored higher on it than those reporting fewer. Empathy and social support appeared to buffer against the effect. Read more

71. In cruel people, the brain dims to every face โ€” not just frightened ones. Psychopathy is often described as a specific blindness to others’ distress. But EEG showed that “meanness” โ€” the callous, low-empathy component โ€” was linked to weaker responses to angry, happy, fearful and neutral faces alike, within 200 milliseconds of the face appearing. Boldness and disinhibition, the other two psychopathy traits, showed nothing of the kind. Read more

Things everyone assumed were true, but aren’t

74. Your brain doesn’t just shrink as you age โ€” it changes shape. Tracking the geometry of the whole brain rather than the volume of its parts, researchers found regions drifting apart and compressing together in consistent patterns, especially between temporal and subcortical areas. These shifts held up even after accounting for shrinkage, and the more extreme the distortion, the worse people did on memory and executive function. Read more

75. People really do report personality changes after organ transplants โ€” and it isn’t only hearts. Recipients describe shifts in food preferences, musical taste and temperament, and it happens across organ types. Beyond the obvious psychological explanations, there are plausible biological routes: donated organs keep releasing hormones and signalling molecules at their own baseline rather than yours. Natriuretic peptide levels, for instance, rise after transplant and never return to normal. Read more

76. Big animals have surprisingly small brains โ€” and humans broke the pattern hard. Brain and body size were long assumed to scale in a straight line. Data from around 1,500 species shows the relationship is actually a curve that flattens as animals get bigger, which is why elephants and whales have brains that look undersized. 77. The protein blamed for Alzheimer’s is most abundant in healthy newborns. p-tau217 is treated as a hallmark of neurodegeneration. Measuring it across more than 400 people, researchers found the highest concentrations of anyone tested were in premature babies, full-term babies second โ€” the earlier the birth, the higher the level, and all of them perfectly healthy. Feeding 7.9 million congressional speeches through AI models, researchers found older speakers adopting new word meanings at nearly the same rate as younger ones, occasionally getting there first. 79. Menthol improved cognition in mice with Alzheimer’s. Simply inhaling it appeared to regulate the immune system and reduce brain inflammation โ€” an unlikely therapeutic lead, though so far only in animals. Read more

80. “Smart drugs” make you try harder and do worse. Forty healthy adults took methylphenidate, modafinil, dextroamphetamine or placebo across four double-blind sessions, then tackled a complex optimization puzzle. On the drugs they spent more time and made more moves โ€” while the quality of their solutions fell. 81. You are carrying gene tweaks from a cousin species that died out 40,000 years ago โ€” and a few of them touch brain development. Most people carry a couple of percent Neanderthal DNA, souvenirs of ancient interbreeding. Sifting 3,442 genomes, researchers found autistic people carry more of the rare Neanderthal variants โ€” the uncommon ones slowly exiting the gene pool โ€” rather than more Neanderthal DNA overall. As one researcher put it, the question isn’t whether Neanderthals gave us autism; it’s that they left us some of the gene tweaks involved. Read more

82. Paper beats screens โ€” and brain scans show why. University of Tokyo researchers had students read manga on paper or on a tablet. Comprehension accuracy came out the same, but paper readers answered complex questions faster while showing lower activation in language and integration regions of the left frontal lobe. Tablet readers recruited extra right-hemisphere areas tied to spatial processing โ€” they got there, but had to work harder to rebuild the story’s layout. Read more

83. A trait treated as a deficit turns out to power better learning. People scoring high on “insistence on sameness” โ€” the preference for predictability often framed as an autistic limitation โ€” showed greater persistence in a probabilistic learning game, sticking with a puzzle instead of switching away. 84. Socially anxious people don’t scan the room for threats โ€” they avoid looking at anything. The intuitive model says social anxiety means hypervigilance. Eye-tracking suggests the opposite: anxious participants avoided looking not only at strangers but at their surroundings generally. The gaze pattern is retreat, not scanning. Read more

85. How many animals you can name in a minute predicts how long you’ll live. Tracking cognitive abilities in very old adults over years rather than testing once, researchers found verbal fluency outperformed other mental abilities at predicting survival. A replication five times the size of the famous original, drawing on 630,000 audio recordings from 2,197 people across four countries, found women spoke 1,073 more words per day on average. No meaningful gap appeared among 10-17s, 18-24s, or the over-65s. 88. The “macho hormone” doesn’t make you a risk-taker. Testosterone has been blamed for reckless driving, bar fights and bad financial bets for decades. Pooling 52 studies covering 17,340 participants, researchers found the overall association with risk-taking to be essentially zero. 89. AI-generated music moved people’s bodies more than human compositions did. Eighty-eight people watched identical video clips scored three ways: composed by a human, generated by AI from a detailed prompt, and generated from a simple one. Both AI soundtracks produced wider pupil dilation than the human music, a marker of emotional arousal, and the detailed-prompt version drove more blinking and skin conductance change, suggesting higher cognitive load. After more than two hours of continuous gaming, players’ pupil diameter dropped measurably, in casual and hardcore players alike. 92. Seven years of possession turned out to be a mood disorder. A 55-year-old woman in rural Maharashtra was brought to a psychiatric clinic by her daughter. For seven years she had experienced episodes lasting up to two hours in which she spoke in a different voice and behaved entirely out of character. The family had sought help from faith healers first, delaying medical care. The eventual diagnosis was trance and possession disorder, rooted in an underlying dysthymia. Read more

93. A man was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It was his back pain medication. A 67-year-old began having auditory and visual hallucinations, and was referred to psychiatry with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. He’d noticed something his doctors hadn’t: the hallucinations tracked his dose of Norco, a hydrocodone-acetaminophen painkiller โ€” worse when he took more, and always within his prescribed range. 94. Just being told the name of your condition can make you feel better. Psychiatrists have given this a name of its own: the Rumpelstiltskin effect, after the fairy-tale figure who loses his power the moment someone says his name. Patients often report relief on diagnosis alone, before any treatment. Things that visibly change your brain

95. An hour in the forest quiets the amygdala. An hour in the city does nothing. Sixty-three Berliners were randomly assigned to walk either through an urban forest or down a busy shopping street, with fMRI before and after. Amygdala activity dropped after the forest walk and held steady after the city walk โ€” causal evidence, not just the usual correlation between green space and wellbeing. Read more

96. Five minutes in a cold bath rewires how your brain networks talk to each other. Participants who took a 20ยฐC whole-body bath came out feeling more active, alert, attentive, proud and inspired. Brain imaging tied those gains to increased coupling between networks governing attention, emotion and self-regulation. Curiously, the drop in negative emotions showed no such neural signature.
